Prettification of nature

The aristocracy of recent centuries strove to prettify nature, to anthropomorphize it and to bring it under control. The promotion of the manicured garden has taken place at the expense of wilderness areas that have consequently been razed and paved. Such gardens provide a way of shaping nature to the whim of man and justify the lack of protection accorded to any wilderness.
