The plantar fascia is a thin layer of connective tissue that supports the arch of the foot. When this tissue becomes inflamed, a pain can develop in in the heel of the foot. Common symptoms include severe pain with the first few steps in the morning, pain with prolonged standing, and pain that decreases with activity.
