Instability of date trade

Nature

World trade in dates is declining, mainly due to competition from other fruits. This decline primarily affects high-quality dates imported by developed countries. Low quality dates are exported principally by Iraq and imported by China and India. Two thirds of the international trade is between developing countries.

Incidence

At least one million people live solely from the proceeds of date production which is estimated to be about 2 million tons annually.
