Inadequate existing symbols for marriage

  • Lack of sustaining symbols in marriages
  • Manipulation of marriage by inadequate symbols

Nature

Couples are not conscious of the need for sustaining symbols in marriage. They are therefore manipulated by inadequate symbols created by society, such as the album of wedding photographs. These reduce the significance of the family as an institution and tend to define the roles of men and women as merely sexual and financial, limiting the context in which marriage operates and disintegrating of the roles each individual must play in order to sustain the family covenant.
