Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone controls the metabolic rate and too much can produce symptoms of nervousness, heart palpitations, heat intolerance and rapid heart beat. The most common type of hyperthyroidism is Graves disease.
