Gastroparesis

Nature

Gastroparesis is a stomach disorder in which food moves through the stomach more slowly than usual. People with gastroparesis suffer from chronic nausea and vomiting. It is a chronic and lifelong disease that can significantly affect the quality of life and well-being of sufferers.

Although numerous things can contribute to gastroparesis, diabetes and previous surgeries are the most common causes. Diabetes can be a cause due to the prolonged levels of high glucose that slowly injures the nerves in the stomach. In some cases where a peptic ulcer may have obstructed the stomach, the muscles of the stomach slowly dilate, and even with surgery the muscle never regenerates again.

Incidence

An estimated 3 percent to 5 percent of the US population suffers to sme degree from the symptoms of gastroparesis.
