Garbage babies is a colloquial term given to newborn babies left in garbage dumps, dumpsters, sewers and other waste places.
According to the Edhi Foundation, the cumulative number of dead infants it had collected from Karachi's dumps was 999 in 2009. 45 bodies were recovered in the city in 2014 alone. Most children found are less than a week old. The ratio of female infants is higher as compared to male infants. Also according to conservative estimates by the Edhi Foundation, more than 1,000 infants were killed or abandoned to die in Pakistan in 2010. People leave these children mostly because they think they are illegitimate.
