Fashionable mental disorders

  • Overdiagnosis of ill-defined psychological problems
  • Excessive publicity for mental syndromes

Nature

A particular mental disorder can become fashionable, often shortly after it has been publicly labelled for the first time, or after a public figure admits to suffering from it. Patients and doctors enquire if the newly recognized syndrome might be responsible for patient ill health. Overdiagnosis and overprescription of medication or therapy may occur.
