Failure of ethical investment funds

  • Unintentioned unethical investment

Incidence

A survey by a consumer magazine found that one ethical investment fund had more investments in companies which damage the environment than ethical funds which do not have a specific environmental objective. Another fund, which aims to avoid arms companies, has invested a group which makes weapons-launching systems for nuclear submarines. Many funds also invest indirectly in areas which they claim to avoid because they buy into financial companies whose investments they cannot track. Complete avoidance of the criteria they were ostensibly concerned about was achieved by only a small proportion of the investment funds.
