The reversion to more primitive and bestial ways of conduct which is part of the killing and destruction of war, is for the combatants an opportunity to explore a level of consciousness which precedes by millions of years the more rational, compassionate and humane consciousness of our era. For many this journey is an exhilarating, stimulating adventure in consciousness, no matter how great the physical suffering and tribulation endured. This delight is most often an experience among combatants, not shared by civilians to any great extent.
