Discrimination against divorcees

  • Prejudicial treatment of divorcees
  • Active social prejudice towards divorce

Incidence

Pastoral guidelines for catholic priests, issued in 1997, said the divorced who remarry still belong to the church, but the church must not express any sign, public or private, that could appear to be a legitimization of the new union. Priests were also to counsel those who have not remarried to remain faithful to their original vows and not to enter into other unions.
