Corrosive substances are those which possess the property of severely damaging living (in particular human) tissue and of attacking other materials such as metals and wood. Although the risks to humans from such substances appear more evident with respect to direct tissue damage, the attacking of non-living material is also significant, particularly to those concerned with the transport of dangerous goods and for whom the safety of the carriers (railway trucks, road vehicles, sea and inland waterway vessels, and aircraft) are of prime concern.
