Human embryos may be sold to couples or to single persons unable to conceive a baby of their own. The fertilized embryo may be transferred from one woman to another, or it may involve the surgical removal of an unfertilized egg which is fertilized in a laboratory dish before being replaced in the original owner. Objections to such practices centre around the commercial aspects (the cost for such procedures in the USA is between $2,500 and $7,000); such a sale of human life is said to cheapen it by turning it into a consumer product.
