Cold as an occupational hazard
- Lack of warmth at work
Nature
Important hazards associated with cold work are chilblains, erythrocyanosis, immersion foot, and frostbite as a result of cutaneous vaso-constriction. General hypothermia is not unusual. Urine production increases in cold weather. Dehydration can be brought on by strenuous physical work in the cold. Frequency of rheumatism and bronchopulmonary disease may be greater among some of those engaged in cold work. Both the reduction in the temperature of the hands and the wearing of protective gloves reduce dexterity and therefore increase the risk of mistakes and accidents.
