Endemic crime coupled with high levels of interpersonal, domestic, gang and political violence has socialized a new generation of sex offenders committing child-on-child rape. Over 50 percent of juveniles in South African prisons are held for sex-related offences. There are increasing numbers of reports of children from as young as 5 and 6 years of age committing sex offences as severe as those committed by adult offenders. Rape and gang-rape of children by their classmates at school is common.
