Behavioural stress in pets

Incidence

Disruption of home life can cause psychological distress for pets. Dogs and cats can demonstrate defensive behaviour, lethargy and, in extreme cases, self-mutilation, in response to rows in the home or a separation. When a dominant partner in the home leaves, a dog can become more assertive in its behaviour. Behavioural problems may be more marked because a dog is psychologically incompetent because of inadequate training.
