Neglecting national variations in the basis of statistical estimates, figures from Interpol indicate that in 1990 there were approximately 1,275,000 cases of armed robbery reported from 91 countries worldwide, namely 42.1 per 100,000 population; some 383,000 (namely 30%) were claimed to have been resolved. In the UK, armed robberies increased from 480 in 1970 to 5,300 in 1991.

In the Netherlands, only 25% of armed robberies are by professional burglars.
