Zammai (Zen, Japanese)
- Sanmai
- Samadhi
Description
This state is more akin to the Hindu than the Buddhist concept of [samadhi]
, the latter usually referring to "one-pointedness". "One pointedness" of mind presupposes a point to which the mind is directed - but [zammai]
is beyond that. The mind is totally tranquil and calm, and although awake the mind is totally absorbed in itself, seeing no duality, no distinction between subject and object. This is not yet full enlightenment, however, as although the experience may be identical in nature it is not lasting and can occur at any stage of spiritual progress. As such it is more akin to [kensho]
when that term is used in the transitory sense.
