Two-fold knowledge (Systematics)

  • Discriminative knowledge
  • Polar knowledge
  • Experience of polarity

Description

Any pair of terms between which both connection and disjunction are experienced. Few pairs stand in more than weak opposition to one another or with more than insignificant connection. Through polarity, everything is experienced as being in a state of strain which polarity itself can do nothing to relieve. It gives rise to force which may be transformed into direction. It can neither show how oppositions arise nor how they may be resolved. Its closure is not that of completeness. The power to recognize differences of quality demands the separation of consciousness characteristic of polarity. Polarity is experienced as too uncomfortable to be endured, as such it is a source of disturbance compelling deeper penetration into what is experienced.

Context

The second in a sequence of twelve modes of knowledge, identified by J G Bennett, inspired by G Gurdjieff.
