Sacred places

  • Sanctuary
  • Holy places

Description

Holy places are areas particularly associated with the presence of a spiritual force or god. This may be a building such as a temple, built in a place where a god may have manifested his presence; or simply a place such as a spring, tree or mountain, often associated with particular rites (eg. fertility). Areas like this come to be taboo and persons entering them have to fulfil certain criteria and perform certain rituals.
