Needs

Description

Individual and social development are said to come together in the striving for satisfaction of human needs. However, there is some disagreement on the definition of such needs, some claiming that true needs are universal and objective, while others consider them to be subjective and dependent on society and the environment. These latter needs may perhaps be defined as desires, the desire for a particular means of satisfaction of a need which is universal: for example, the need for mobility may be translated into the desire for a car. The basic needs which require satisfaction may be considered under the headings [welfare]

, [security]

, [identity]

and [freedom]

. Material needs are usually better satisfied in developed countries while non-material needs in less developed countries, although this situation is changing.
