Lightness of consciousness (Buddhism)

Description

This refers to the lightness or quickness of the aggregate consciousness. The characteristic is suppressing or quieting heaviness of the citta, the function is to crush its heaviness. It is manifest as non-sluggishness. Consciousness is the proximate cause and it is the opponent of stiffness and torpor causing heaviness in consciousness. Lightness of mental body and lightness of consciousness are considered together.

Context

One of the formations aggregate (mental coefficients) of Hinayana Buddhism, being listed among the constant states which appear in their true nature, and as profitable primary (always present in any profitable or profitable-resultant consciousness).
