Interior life (Christianity)

John Ruusbruec describes the person as a double mirror. In the higher part of his being he receives the image of God and all His gifts. In the lower part of his being he receives corporeal images through the senses. Turning inward he can practice righteousness unhindered, but through inconstancy he turns outward. He then gets caught up in the activities of the senses and falls into daily faults. However, for the righteous person constantly moving inward, in love, these faults are merely a drop of water in a red-hot furnace.
