Nymphomania in women and satyriasis in men are said to be the result of excessive and persistent sexual desire and may give rise to erotic frenzy. Because the language used to describe ecstatic religious experiences of mystical union with God is so similar to that used in erotic language, some psychologists have attributed all such spiritual states to overactive eroticism.
