Awareness of relative reality (Hinduism, Yoga)
- Conditional consciousness states
- Avastha
Description
In yoga there are three states (avasthas) of consciousness dominated by the subjective influence of the ego. They are the ordinary waking state (jagrat); the dreaming sleep state (swapna); and the deep, dreamless sleep state (susupti). The "fourth" state (turiya) is objective, pure knowledge which takes in its field the true self. Beyond this is a supra-conscious state (turyatita) of being in union with one's god.
