Aparigraha
- Non-possessiveness
- Desirelessness
- Non-covetousness
Description
The tendency to amass wealth and possessions diverts time and energy in the acquisition and maintenance of what one owns, and mental energy in concern over losing it, either temporarily in this world or permanently on death. Although it is possible to have possessions without attachment to them, the aspiring yogi is advised to reduce worldly possessions to the minimum. He is thus protected from vanity and greed, from wasting limited internal resources and from disturbance of mind.
Context
One of the five moral qualities or virtues of yama (restraint), together comprising the "great vow", the first component of the eightfold path of yoga. One of the five great vows – mahavrata – of Jainism.
