Transformation

Description

1. The operation of changing in character or condition (such as by rotation, translation, or mapping) one configuration, structure or expression, into another in accordance with a mathematical rule. The formula, equation or rule (transform function) that effects such a change defines a many-one or one-one correspondence between the elements of function sets.

2. The operation of changing an expression, formula or statement in logic into a different form without altering its substance or intent.

3. All known structures (from mathematical groups to kinship systems) are, without exception, systems of transformation. The laws of composition of a structure are defined as governing the transformations of the system which they structure. In the absence of transformation, structures would lose all explanatory import, since they would collapse into static forms.
