Integrated information system
Description
An information system which aims to channel all the data of an organization into a common data base and service all data processing and information functions for the entire organization dependent upon it. Although full implementation of a totally integrated system appears to be technically and economically impractical at the present time, many organizations attempt to move toward a greater degree of integration due to: dissatisfaction with the hierarchical approach because of fragmentation and noncoordination of the information function; and potential ability to effect more integration due to technological developments, especially in the area of computers and telecommunications.
